Key takeaways
- 01Regional SEO and Generative Engine Optimization address different needs.
- 02Use truthful business information and service geography.
- 03No special file or markup guarantees an AI citation.
Separate the meanings
Regional promotion concerns where an offer is available. GEO can also mean Generative Engine Optimization: making information discoverable and useful in AI-generated answers.
The former needs clear service conditions; the latter needs understandable, verifiable content. Both start with an accurate offer.
Describe the real geography
Keep business names, contacts, addresses and service areas consistent across the site and official profiles. Explain how remote projects work rather than inventing local offices.
Yandex regional association does not automatically exclude a site from other regions. Create local pages only when their information genuinely differs.
Publish verifiable answers
State the question, give a direct answer and explain conditions. Separate advice, examples and proven outcomes. Identify the editorial source and cite external rules where relevant.
Describe actual service scope and case responsibilities instead of unsupported results or superlatives.
Keep content accessible
Make the main text available in HTML, link to sources and keep structured data consistent with the visible page. Maintain canonical URLs and a clear section structure. For Google AI features, a page needs to be indexed and eligible for a normal search result with a snippet; special AI files or markup do not replace that foundation.
Google’s current guide explicitly states that Search ignores llms.txt: the file neither improves nor harms visibility or rankings in Google. It may be maintained for other systems that use the format. Do not turn the page into hidden “AI text”: the useful answer must remain available to people.
Measure observable signals
Google documents a Generative AI performance report in Search Console: impressions of links to the site in AI features, grouped by page, country, device and time. These are not qualified inquiries. Check report availability, sufficient data and inclusion in AI features in the actual account; an absent report should not be presented as zero visibility.
Yandex Webmaster measures visibility in Alice through Share of Voice and source examples on a limited query sample. It is not a report of clicks or payments. If data is insufficient, record that condition. Compare observations over matching periods with referrals and actual inquiry outcomes; one manually obtained AI answer is not a stable ranking.
