People&Boats

A platform for boat and yacht owners: a logbook, a chart of the water, build audits, a marketplace and a club — the brief taken apart, a design system and a prototype on iPhone and the web.

5

modules and one team panel

The brief

Five modules, two platforms — one brand

People&Boats — «Lyudi i lodki» in Russian — is a community and media brand about motorboats, yachts, shipyards and engines. We were sent a brief for a marketplace, the brand's ecosystem and an admin panel; a logbook, a chart and brokerage were mentioned but never described, so we rebuilt them from the references inside the brief. Taking it apart showed the main thing: four different products live under one brand, each with economics of its own.

  • Modules 1–2 · logbook and chart

    The owner's utility

A tool for every trip: documents, servicing, engine hours and points on the water.

Lives onRetention — it is what brings a person back to the app.

Dies ofBoredom: if entering data takes longer than a notebook, nobody will.

  • Module 4 · C2C and B2C listings

    The marketplace

A market with a filter of the trade's own that general classifieds do not have.

Lives onPaid listings, promotion and a commission on services.

Dies ofEmptiness: fifty listings are a page on a site, not a market.

  • Module 3 · brokerage, audit, inspection

    The service business

Real experts: they visit the yard, file a report, inspect a boat before purchase.

Lives onA share of every deal and a price for inspections — the clearest revenue.

Dies ofOperations: the app is a shop window, the expert carries the quality.

  • Module 5 · hub, award, voyages, rental

    Media and brand

What already works for the brand: reviews, voyages, recognition.

Lives onShipyard advertising, RIB rental and partnerships around the award.

Dies ofSilence: media needs a rhythm of publishing, not a one-off build.

Four roles — one core

An owner today is a seller tomorrow and a renter the day after. So there is one account, and a boat is entered once: the logbook, a listing and an inspection request all take their data from the same record. Hence the honest filter in the marketplace — the engine hours in a listing are the ones in the logbook.

Operations

One web panel for all five modules: moderation queues, brokerage, points on the chart, bookings and analytics.

Module 01 · Logbook

Everything about the boat — at hand

The day starts with the water: the weather, the wind, the swell and a verdict on whether to go out. Below is the fleet with its gauges, like a boat's dashboard: engine hours to the next service and fuel. Documents live with their dates — the app reminds about insurance 30, 7 and 1 day ahead, and an overdue technical inspection does not get lost in a list.

  1. Engine hours to service

A ring shows how much is left before the engine's planned service — no spreadsheet, no notebook.

  2. Documents with dates

Vessel certificate, GIMS registration, insurance and licence — with reminders and scans that open without a signal.

  3. A record of trips

Route, weather, fuel and notes — what later becomes the boat's history and honest data in a listing.

Module 02 · Chart

Shoals and deadheads — on the chart, not in chats

The chart of the Pirogovskoye and Klyazminskoye reservoirs is drawn by the app itself and works without a signal — on the water there often is none. Owners mark moorings, fuel and hazards, a moderator checks them, other skippers confirm. Hover over a point or tap it.

Users' marks do not replace official charts and GIMS notices — the app says so right next to the chart. The marks on this page are the prototype's demo data.

Module 03 · Build audit

Half a year after the deposit — not in silence

A boat takes three months to a year to build, and all that time the client pays and sees nothing. The tracker turns the wait into a chain of confirmed stages: the yard uploads photos and video straight from the shop, the client leaves a remark while it is still cheap to fix, and the archive of reports becomes the record that backs the handover. Pick a stage.

The same tracker on the iPhone: the stages, the workshop's reports and a chat with the yard — one tap from any tab, through the accessory above them.

Module 04 · Marketplace

A filter classifieds don't have

Nobody lets you search for a boat by engine hours and GIMS registration — the state register of small craft. Here a listing is born from the boat's card in the logbook: engine hours, year, engine and papers are already filled in, the seller only adds a price. And «Verified» is not a button but a service: behind the badge is an expert's report with an expiry date. Try the filters and tap a brass badge.

Module 05 · Ecosystem

Media and the club — inside the product

Media is People&Boats' strong side, so it is built into the product rather than kept on a separate site: reviews link to listings, voyages to the chart, and the award collects votes from owners with verified accounts.

  • Media hub

Boat videos — linked to listings

Videos from RuTube, VK Video, YouTube and Dzen in one feed. If the boat in a review is for sale, the listing is right next to it.

iOS 26 · Liquid Glass

An app you can see from the lock screen

The prototype is built in SwiftUI for iOS 26: the glass tab bar folds away as you scroll, and the build is not buried in a menu — it lives in the accessory above the tabs. A trip records into a Live Activity and the Dynamic Island, the build and the logbook live in widgets, and «Start a trip» sits in Control Centre.

  • Lock screen

    Live Activity

Speed, miles covered and time under way — without unlocking the phone.

  • Home screen

    Widgets and the compact island

Engine hours and the build in plain view, while the trip records in the background — its speed shows in the island.

  • In the app

The island as a trip console

A long press marks a hazard or pauses the trip, and the chart warns of the shoal on the course.

System features
  • Live Activity and Dynamic Island
  • Home and lock screen widgets
  • A Control Centre button
  • Siri and Spotlight shortcuts

Web · team panel

Five modules — one panel

The website is about search and trust: indexable boat pages, media, the award and bookings. The team panel runs the process: moderation of listings and posts, brokerage and the build tracker, points on the chart, bookings and analytics — with roles and a reaction time on every queue.

Design system

A yacht club, not a classifieds board

Quiet confidence and plenty of air: photos of water work as the main colour, monospaced labels read like the markings on navigation instruments, and trust is always visible — the «Verified» badge and the GIMS status both carry a date. Glass is only for navigation over content; cards stay plain surfaces, or the glass loses its meaning.

The order of things

Not all at once — three releases

Shipping everything in one release is the fastest way to get four weak products instead of one strong one. What the brand's content and experience already support goes first, the marketplace opens on the boats that brokerage brought in, and the services arrive for the season.

  1. 1Release 1

    Core and trust

    • Logbook and chart
    • Media hub
    • Brokerage and the build tracker

Brings owners back every week and gives the first verified boats.

  2. 2Release 2

    Marketplace

    • Listings from logbooks
    • The trade's own filter
    • Inspections and «Verified»

Opens on brokerage's boats, not on an empty shop window.

  3. 3Release 3

    For the season

    • RIB rental and booking
    • Expeditions
    • Boat of the Year award

Services and voting — once the audience is already in the app.

Outcome

A product you can see whole

The prototype runs on demo data: people, prices, shipyards and chart marks are made up, and listings are named by the type and length of the boat in the photo.

  • A brief analysis: four products and their risks
  • A product map: roles, core, five modules
  • A brand design system for iOS and the web
  • An iPhone prototype: tabs, widgets, Live Activity
  • Prototypes of the catalogue site and the team panel
  • A launch plan in three releases
